A Calgary judge has ruled a company did
nothing wrong when it fired an employee for bringing a prostitute to its
downtown office after hours.
Jim Whitehouse worked as a broker with RBC
Dominion Securities in Calgary until 2004, when he was fired. He sued his
former employer for wrongful dismissal and the company counter-sued for $6 million,
saying Whitehouse had hurt the company's reputation.
A judge has thrown both cases out, upholding
Whitehouse's dismissal.
The case was being closely watched by the
business community as the outcome may be precedent setting.
The man's lawyer, Gabor Zinner, said Tuesday
his client is disappointed with the ruling and already planning an appeal. One
possible avenue is that the company didn't punish Whitehouse for bringing
prostitutes into the office until the day he was fired, said Zinner.
"And if the employer chooses not to do
anything about it, not to reprimand, not to discipline the employee, then that
amounts to condonation and where there is condonation then the employer can not
summarily dismiss without first giving him a warning," he said.
The case will be heard in the Alberta Court of
Appeal later this year.
Since his dismissal, Whitehouse has been hired
by a competing brokerage and his lawyer says he has successfully rebuilt his
business.
.. to related story ends -->Whitehouse was earning
$424,000 a year before he lost his job after 16 years with the firm.
The disgraced broker was fired after his
bosses learned that he brought a prostitute up to his office late one night.
The woman brought the matter to their attention after turning up the next
morning demanding payment from Whitehouse.
The woman alleges that Whitehouse refused to
pay her $200 fee.
Whitehouse admitted his actions were
inappropriate but says the manner in which he was laid off was offensive and
damaging to his career. Court heard that he was escorted from the office after
a terse five-minute meeting.

First of all, thanks to Steph and Fark for shit like
this to drive me crazy. Rich people, for the most part, are cheap-asses. None
of this would be happening to him if he'd paid the whore 200 bucks. This
turd-bucket made $424,000 a year...splurge, dickhole.
What's worse is that not only did he make that
kind of money and not pay the hooker he brought to his office (I guess he
didn't want to pay for a hotel room either...that's like almost $50)...he sued
his company even though he was hired by a competing firm. He probably makes the
same salary. What a shit.
By the way, here's what the hooker looked
like:

Really?
I'm guessing he didn't take her home because
he is/was married. What I don't get is why people with money put themselves in
this situation. Some folks stay in a marriage that they don't like because they
have kids or because they really can't afford to get out of it. Hell, it took
me over 2 years to get out of my marriage because I was comfortable, and I knew
how hard all the shit would be (so I waited to do it while going through two
DWI arrests...GENIUS!).
But if you make over 400 grand a year...you
can afford to get divorced. Shit, eat half that. Give her the house. Give her
all your furniture. Go out and get a bachelor pad, and start dating uber-hot
annoying 21 year-old gold-diggers. Be a fucking sugar daddy, for fuck's sake.
Live your life and spend your money while you have it. Date a stripper. If
you're going to slum it and risk getting a burning sensation when
you urinate, at least risk it with a hot chick. Fuck the
double-life shit. If you're going to be a jag-off, don't do it half-assed. Be
the biggest jag-off you can be.
